Anticipation is building for the November midterm elections. It can feel like waiting for that restorative rainstorm that finally arrives after a years-long drought. It’s as if, by hanging on for several more months, our thirst for normalcy will finally be rewarded with the chance to eject the Congressional representatives who let an authoritarian-style president maul our democracy. And then we can slip back into our old lives, easily and tidily.

It’s nice to hope that, but it isn’t realistic. The current administration and its allies have been pushing forward with ways to restrict voting and safeguard a continued Trump 2.0 regime. 

To build the inclusive democracy we want, our Project 2029 Pillars urges us to “uphold robust protections of voting rights, transparent elections, and active representation of diverse communities in decision-making processes.” 

It’s time for that now. Here are some of the threats on our radar. 

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, growing concerns are emerging over new efforts that could make voting more difficult for millions of Americans.

From the proposed federal SAVE America Act to state-level voting restrictions and ongoing gerrymandering efforts, advocates warn that changes to voter registration requirements, mail-in voting processes, and identification laws could create confusion and barriers for voters ahead of November.

Coming Soon: May Day
No Work, No School, No Shopping

Our friends at Indivisible are once again rallying Americans to stand up and make our economic power known on May Day, Friday, May 1. We encourage everyone to join, if you are able.

With living expenses rising for most Americans while billionaires are getting tax breaks, organizers will advocate for better pay and working conditions through a day of "No Work, No School, No Shopping."

A coalition of educators, labor unions, and immigrant advocacy groups are planning rallies and gatherings across the country. The big planned action is also meant as a signal to the administration not to tamper with the midterm elections.

The plan, if you hadn’t heard, involves pulling the headquarters out of Washington, DC (close to policy action), relocating it to Utah, and closing nine regional offices and 37 forest research sites. It also means putting more responsibility for the management of federal lands on the states.

At the request of alarmed customers and advocacy groups, outdoor brands and companies like Patagonia, Columbia Sportswear, and Nalgene have joined an alliance to speak out. The objections are: the plan is good for extractive industries, but bad for conservation and for people who want to visit public land. Critics also predict the restructuring will harm local communities, tribes, and the careers and livelihoods of dedicated workers in this specialized field.

The protesting brands’ comments and social media posts forced a new justification of the plan from the presidential administration. The government said its plan will “strengthen local leadership, streamline operations, and improve mission delivery.”
